AAP delivers on water promise

Kejriwal denies reports that the scheme is only for 3 months

After ending the capital’s VIP culture, the Arvind Kejriwal-led government on Monday fulfilled the Aam Aadmi Party’s first big electoral promise, announcing 666 litres of free water supply every day to each household with functional water meters.

This amounts to roughly 34 buckets of water to a family of five every day.

The announcement was made by the newly-appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Delhi Jal Board, Vijay Kumar, at a press conference in front of Mr. Kejriwal’s residence.

Free of cost

Mr. Vijay Kumar later told journalists: “All the domestic consumers having metered connection will get 20 kilolitres of water a month free of cost, starting January 1. We will not even levy any existing charge such as water cess and sewerage charge. But if the consumption limit crosses 20 kilolitres, the consumer will have to pay for the total water, and other charges.”

At present, consumers pay Rs. 200 for 20 kilolitres of water a month. In its manifesto, the AAP promised the electors 700 litres of free water supply daily to each household.

Immediately after the announcement was made, Mr. Kejriwal tweeted: “It is the duty of any responsible government to provide ‘lifeline water’ to its citizens. We may debate the quantum but can we argue against the principle?”

The Chief Minister also clarified that the free water scheme was not for three months as reported by a section of the media. “It is wrongly being said our decision is for three months. Decision is for good. But obviously financial calculations are for the remaining period of the current financial year which will end on March 31,” he said.

He also explained that the DJB would incur a revenue loss of just Rs. 160 crore a year and Rs. 40 crore for the rest of the financial year.

However, the freebie has come with a spike in water tariff by 10 per cent for consumption above 666 litres. The increase is expected to enable the DJB generate the extra revenue at the cost of rich consumers, said a DJB official.

Sources in the DJB said that for the population living outside the water supply network, the board would deploy tankers.

The government’s decision would bring joy only to those who have water connections. According to government statistics, 30 per cent of Delhi’s population live in urban villages and unauthorised colonies, and these localities — which house poor sections — have no official water connection.

The city has 14,000 km of water pipeline network, and only 68 per cent of the households have piped water connection. About 25 per cent of the city area remains uncovered by the pipelined supply.

The latest report from the Comptroller and Auditor-General says there remains inequality in water distribution. The per capita availability varies from 29 litre per capita daily (LPCD) on the outskirts to 509 LPCD in posh areas.

According to the report, “the Delhi Jal Board has neither a proper system to measure the water supply to different areas, nor does it have access to reliable data on population in different areas. It, therefore, cannot ensure equitable supply of water.”

Michael Schumacher in 'coma', critical after ski accident

 Michael Schumacher, the seven-time Formula One champion, is in a coma and remains in a "critical" condition after striking his head in a ski accident in the French Alps on Sunday, the hospital treating him said.

The 44-year-old German was "suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation", the hospital in the southeast French city of Grenoble said in a statement.

"He remains in a critical condition." Schumacher had been skiing off-piste in the upmarket Meribel resort, where he reportedly has a property, when he fell and hit his head on a rock, mountain police who gave him first aid said.

He was airlifted to a local hospital, then to the Grenoble facility. A specialist neurosurgeon from Paris was rushed in to oversee his treatment.

The director of the Meribel resort, Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte, had said just after the accident that Schumacher had been wearing a helmet and was "conscious but a little agitated" just after the accident, suggesting he had not received life-threatening injuries.

But when Schumacher then fell into coma, doctors realised the damage was worse than initially feared.

The two mountain police officers who gave first aid said Schumacher was suffering "severe cranial trauma" when they got to him and a helicopter was brought in to evacuate him within 10 minutes.

A renowned Paris neurosurgeon, doctor Gerard Saillant, was brought to the Grenoble hospital in a police car to take charge of the famous patient.

The hospital statement was signed by the facility's neurosurgeon, the professor in charge of its anaesthesia/revival unit, and the hospital's deputy director.

Schumacher was on a private stay in Meribel, according to his spokeswoman. He is to have his 45th birthday next Friday.

Schumacher, who won the last of his world titles in 2004, definitively retired in 2012 in the Brazilian Grand Prix, in which he finished seventh, after an abandoned attempt to quit six years earlier.

Since his debut in 1991, the German towered over the sport, winning more Formula One world titles and races than any other. He had a record 91 wins and is one of only two men to reach 300 Grands Prix.

Schumacher's duels in his heyday with Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve, fired by an unquenchable competitive spirit, have gone down in Formula One lore.

A leaner, fitter Mahesh Babu opens up on the controversial poster and his unflinching faith in director Sukumar.

Mahesh had always been a chiselled actor but this time, there is hardly any discernible fat on him. He looks like a man in his 20s. A wintry morning on the sets of his forthcoming film at the Aluminium Factory, Gachibowli, the actor takes pride in his hard work to get the lean mean look for 1-Nenokkadine and discusses the plusses of his director and crew. “I didn’t cheat on my diet for a year but then I eat a lot of healthy, clean food. My trainers put me on a diet and I eat seven meals a day. It is not like I am really hungry; I am eating frequently but I was warding of the temptation of eating our Indian food. Sukumar asked for a certain athletic look and I gave him my word. Once I got down to doing it, the process became easy. I wanted to be fit and injury free as there is a lot of action in the story,” he says.

The actor is aware of the heat recently generated by one of the film’s poster, in which the heroine crawls on his foot prints on a beach like a canine behind him. He says the poster created unwarranted controversy and stresses there is nothing unpalatable or undignified and it was viewed in isolation. “It is a scene from a song and there is a line that goes ‘oka ganta fish padadhama’. We are sorry if we upset people’s feelings. Maybe we made a mistake, but if you see the film you will concur there is nothing distasteful.”

Mahesh is a tenacious person. If he takes a liking to a person or a habit, he clings to it. Call it sentiment, comfort level, the confidence he places in them or a rapport, he doesn’t let go easily. Not all view it in a positive way. For instance he’s been doing films with the same producers for some time now, including his next film. Ask him about this and he explains, “I’m happy with 14 Reels people. They are passionate about their work. I had worked with many producers but yekkado naku full satisfaction undadhu.  Take for instance 1.When Sukumar narrated the story, he clearly said the budget could go haywire and more time would be required. We all got into the project aware of the risk. If I had done this for someone else, they would have viewed Sukumar and me as criminals. I am happy with this space and set up and will work with others soon.”

The topic veers towards Sukumar and Mahesh tells us how the director met him many times to discuss the story and the producers. The first meeting was in Goa when Mahesh was shooting for Businessman.He heard the plot for 25 minutes. Sukumar was visibly disturbed by the noise, the music in the restaurant and didn’t narrate it well but confided in the actor that it was his dream film. But the ambience, the narration hardly mattered to Mahesh and he took a liking to the fresh plot and the director’s motivation to tread that extra mile. Mahesh agreed to do the film within half an hour.

He avers, “I loved Jagadam. Here too there is a novelty in frames, costumes and the entire look. Choreographer Prem Rakshit deserves a solo mention in the title card. The song ‘Who Are You’ is path-breaking; we haven’t seen a proper rock song so far. He gave up other films for this as we insisted he travel with us and stay connected with the story. In most films you see dances coming out of the blue with no connection to the story since dance masters land on the sets on the day of the shoot and the result — hero heroine separate ga eguruthoo untaaru. Kajal was not preferred as she had problems with her dates. We needed 90 days in London and so thought a new artiste would come without a baggage.”

1-Nenokkadine is a psychological thriller and it has the actor’s son play a cameo. But how did the child manage his dubbing? Mahesh is in splits reminiscing Gautham’s antics. He quips, “He enjoyed the shoot and dubbing thoroughly. Yesterday he was telling his mom he has a couple of days more of dubbing left and was questioning if they would call him or not and if they would release the film without his dubbing. He also said he would not like to be a part of the publicity.” A little star in the making? “For all I know the little head might be thinking this could be the best way to avoid school by going to the studio.”

So what about New Year plans? “New Year eve is always at home. It is a sentiment; we celebrate with a close set of people. Maybe on the 2nd or 3rd I might go on a short holiday but wherever I am, I am a bundle of nerves before the film releases. Who cares and remembers if my last film was a success? I need to work harder.”

President dodges Telangana query

Indian political parties do learn lessons from the people’s mandate and do a mid-course correction as was evident from the fact that the country has seen stable governments for the past decade and a half despite fractured mandates, said President Pranab Mukherjee, during an informal chat with reporters on his return from Allahabad on Wednesday

“There is an unwritten understanding among parties since 1999 that stability in governance should not be disturbed,” he said.

The President shared his views on wide ranging issues like the strength of Indian democracy, the lessons people teach to political parties, simplicity of elected representatives, the changing trends in elections, advent of social media and the power of language and art in uniting people.

Asked whether the people of Andhra Pradesh would be relieved of uncertainty in the new year, the President replied diplomatically: “As I said, in our democracy, people and political parties address and resolve all issues.”

Referring to the country facing elections five times between 1989 and 1999 instead of three, the President said a section of people, including the media, strongly advocated Constitutional changes to ensure stability.

The President averred that several Chief Ministers and ministers had practised the highest levels of austerity and simplicity in the past. They lived in two-bed room flats and ran the administration for a long time. Even election expenditure was kept to a minimum.

“All that the candidates did was to follow a designated party worker in a car sent by the party and address people wherever they were told to,” he recalled.

The President’s observations gained significance in the backdrop of Aam Admi Party making big news out of its leader Aravind Kejriwal refusing official bungalows for him and his ministers.

Asked how he is preparing for an eventful year ahead when the country goes in for a general election, Mukherjee said he believes democracy will always win in the end.

“Some political parties may win and some may lose but it is always democracy that stands winner. In the latest round of elections in Chhattisgarh, people voted in large numbers despite Maoists giving a boycott call,” he said.

The President has also found a welcoming development in the increasing vote percentage, which he says is a reflection of people’s faith in the system.

About one per cent of voters exercising the ‘none of the above’ option in the latest  elections, he said, “It is one form of expression and I am sure political parties will learn lessons from it and change accordingly.”

Veena Malik weds businessman in Dubai

Controversial Pakistani actress Veena Malik today tied the knot with a businessman in Dubai, according to a media report.

The 29-year-old actress, best known in India for her appearance in 'Bigg Boss', and businessman Asad Bashir Khan Khattak, were married in a court in Dubai, Geo News channel reported.

The channel aired footage of the couple flashing their wedding rings and meeting relatives.

Asad, who runs businesses in Dubai and the US, is the son of a friend of Veena's father.

"I'm more than happy today, I think I'm the happiest girl in the world," Veena told the channel outside the court.

She said it was an arranged marriage. "Destiny just plays its part, we were destined to be there on this particular day," she said.

Avika Gor, who essayed the role of Anandi in the serial ‘Chinnari Pellikoothuru’, is the heroine in this movie and Raj Tharun will be seen as the male lead. Virinchi Varma has directed this romantic drama. Story : The story of this film revolves around Suri (Raj Tharun) and Uma Devi (Avika Gor), who happen to be cousins (Bava & Maradhalu). They grow up together and have a love hate relationship of sorts. Suri takes pleasure in playing practical jokes on Uma Devi while the young lady has her own ways of taking revenge. Uma Devi’s family is relatively well off while Suri works hard to support his mother (Anita Chowdary). Uma Devi falls in love with a crook named Pardhu and she is trapped by the sweet talking liar. Just as her life is about to take a disastrous turn, she is rescued by Suri. After this incident, Uma and Suri discover that they admire each other deeply. However, family issues stand in their way and a marriage alliance is arranged for Uma Devi. What will Suri do? Will he muster the courage to declare his love for Uma Devi? That forms the story of this movie. Plus Points : Raj Tharun is a good find for the Telugu Industry. Nice dialogues and well conceived scenes will make you root for the characters. The pre-climax episode will melt the hearts of many. For a small budget film, the film has very good visuals. Casting is perfect for each and every role. Minus Points : The first half of the film could have been better, as it fails to engage viewers as effectively as the second half does. The graph of the film is quite flat for the first 30 minutes or so. After a stirring pre-climax block, the film comes to a very abrupt end. The climax block could have been handled in a much better way. While the songs sound good, most of them do not really help the film’s flow in any way. The film’s appeal might be limited to A centers and multiplexes. If you are looking for hilarious comedy and ‘masala elements’, stay away. Technical Aspects : Cinematography is a big asset for the movie. The village locales have been shot well. Sunny’s background score is good. Editing is neat, but some scenes could have been trimmed off in the first half. Virinchi Varma’s direction is pretty good for a first timer. Dialogues have good depth. Verdict : ‘Uyyala Jampala’ is a small and cute little romantic film that will make you smile at the end. There are good emotional scenes and fine performances in the film that offset some of the issues like a flat first half. Raj & DK are the producers of this movie and popular hero Nani has come in as a co-producer at a later stage. Dil Raju is distributing the film all over the state. Let us check out this movie now. Story : Raju (Sundeep Kishan), Vicky (Varun Sandesh), Harish (Naveen) and Bannu (Rakesh) are good friends. They have their own issues in life and they all need money badly. Raju is a wannabe film hero. Vicky is deep in debt and he needs money to ward off recovery agents. Harish and Bannu need money in order to settle down with the women they love. To get rid of all these issues, they decide to rob a bank. They watch a lot of heist dramas, procure fake weapons and finally muster the courage to storm ‘National Bank’ in Manikonda area. The plan seems to work initially, but like all ‘well laid’ plans, it does not account for unexpected twists. Raju, Vicky and his friends are forced to deal with cops and unexpected guests. What happens in the end? Will they succeed in escaping with the money? That is what ‘D for Dopidi’ is all about. Plus Points : Nani’s voice over sets up the characters nicely. His promotional song comes after the climax and it has been shot well. Deva Katta looks good as an ACP. Sundeep Kishan and Varun Sandesh have done a good job with what was given to them. Melanie Kannokada is just about ok. Tanikella Bharani is good. The first half has a few funny moments. Minus Points : B for Boring and S for Silly. That is what most people will probably say after they walk out of the theater. A heist drama must have one of two qualities to work at the Box Office. It should either be riveting or hilarious. ‘D for Dopidi’ has neither a gripping screenplay nor entertainment. The film drags on an on, especially in the second half. The bank robbery scenes have been handled quite poorly. Tanikella Bharani’s motive for robbing a bank is very silly. The climax block is quite immature. Even if we assume that ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ has come into play, the emotional bonding between the hostages and the robbers has not been handled effectivelyfor this to work. Logic goes for a big toss in the movie and a lot of unexplained holes are present in the script. Technical Aspects : Cinematography is very average. Editing could have been much better. Mahesh Shankar’s music is just about ok. Dialogues are very average and they fail to make a strong impression on viewers. Sriraj Kalla’s direction is not up to the mark. It is quite tough to handle a subject like this and the director’s lack of experience shows. Production values are ok. Verdict : ‘D for Dopidi’ is a film which falls into no man’s land. It neither appeals to serious crime dramalovers nor to casual entertainment seekers. Poor execution has spoilt a promising subject and turned it into in a boring flick. Except for some decent performances and the presence of people like Nani, Tanikella Bharani and Deva Katta, this movie has nothing much to offer.

'Modi for PM': BJP ready with slogan for Lok Sabha polls

BJP on Tuesday decided to firmly peg its Lok Sabha election campaign on the party's Prime Ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, while taking the message to the people that the conditions prevailing now were akin to those witnessed immediately after the Emergency imposed by Congress in 1975.

Following a meeting of chief ministers of five BJP-ruled states and its Parliamentary Board here, general secretary Ananth Kumar told reporters that the election slogan for the party would be 'Modi for PM'.

"BJP's 'Modi for PM' campaign will be on the lines of the JP movement that was launched in the Emergency era to throw out the Congress government," Kumar said.

Maintaining that in 1977, the mood had been strongly anti- Congress, Kumar averred that a similar situation exists today. "It was a watershed year. Nobody thought the opposition could garner so many votes," Kumar said.

The recent Assembly election results show that BJP is head and shoulders above its rivals, Kumar claimed. Kumar also revealed that as part of their ambitious campaign, BJP workers will also collect funds under a 'one vote, one note' programme.

"The minimum amount to be contributed will be Rs 10 while the maximum limit is Rs 1,000," Kumar said.

During the meeting, BJP President Rajnath Singh claimed that wins in three states and a good performance in Delhi in the recent Assembly polls had set the momentum in favour of the party and would help it in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The leaders passed a resolution stating that these results were a referendum that a government has to perform or perish.

The party has only one target — of getting 272-plus seats in Lok Sabha polls.

The party will also hold meetings in over 400 Lok Sabha constituencies before selecting its candidates for the polls.

A national meet of party booth-level workers will be held on February 28 to discuss the micro-level management during polling. The main opposition is also looking to cash in on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birthday on Wednesday by celebrating it as 'Sushashan Diwas' (Good Governance Day).

The party is also highlighting its success in bagging a sizeable number of reserved seats in the recent Assembly elections, especially in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. It will also make efforts to bring more parties into the NDA fold to boost its chances of forming a government at the Centre.

Even before the din created in September this year over the Madurai Corporation having issued death certificates in the names of a sitting Minister and a Member of the Legislative Assembly could settle down, a group of four l

awyers on Monday claimed that the Corporation had also issued a birth certificate in the name of Delhi’s Chief Minister designate Arvind Kejriwal.

The lawyers — S. Muthukumar, S. Mohandas, B. Stalin and V. Linga Natha Durai — visited the Collectorate here on Monday with a copy of the birth certificate which stated that ‘Aravind Kejrival’ was born in Madurai on December 27, 1970.

It also claimed that his parents named as Ramji Rao Gaikwad and Geetha Devi were residing temporarily at Karpaga Nagar in K. Pudur during the relevant time.

When asked how they got access to the certificate containing wrong details such as Kejriwal’s spelling, names of his parents and also the date of birth, Mr. Muthukumar claimed that some unknown person had dropped the birth certificate in his chamber inside the district court premises here on Thursday.

“It was found inside an envelope superscribed with the words — Action Needed,” he said.

Corporation Commissioner Kiran Gurrala said that no such certificate had been issued by the local body. “It is a false and forged document. We have lodged a police complaint seeking an enquiry into the issue,” he added.
