Kareena Kapoor Khan doesn’t get the fuss over married actresses. “Just because I am married doesn’t mean that I am not the person I used to be. I am still Kareena Kapoor. Khan is an addition to who I am, but it doesn’t change me. I have been acting for more than 13 years and I am not going to stop just because I am in love with and married to someone. Come on! That era in Bollywood got over a long time ago. I am just as busy with work as I used to be before Saif and I got married and the films that are coming my way are fabulous. Acting is what I do. I am not going to give up on acting just because I am married,” says the actress who tied the knot with long time beau and fellow actor Saif Ali Khan last year.
The couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary last month in London where Saif was shooting for his next film Sajid Khan’s Humshakal. A year of being Mrs Khan is all that Kareena had thought it would be. “And more,” she says with a coy smile, adding, “at the end of the day, marriage is about two people loving each other enough to want to spend their lives together. You take on all difference and obstacles to be together because nothing else matters. Love and friendship is what makes a marriage work.”
Being extremely busy professionals means that both Kareena and Saif are constantly trying to fit each other in their packed schedules. While Kareena has been busy with promoting Gori Tere Pyaar Main, Saif has Bullet Raja releasing the Friday after. “We’ve barely seen each other in the last couple of weeks. We are constantly in different cities. But the upside to being married is that you do return to the same house at some point. This is just a crazy time for us, but it’s not always like this. We always make time for each other. Like I went to London and then Syria when he was shooting there, he picked me up from the sets of a reality show set last evening. When we are not working, we take off on holidays. We are on holiday most of December and I am so looking forward to that. It’s going to be a month of travelling and just us. No work at all.”
But before she does take off on holiday, Kareena has one last release for 2013, a year that’s been fairly lacklustre for her. Her only other release this year was Satyagrah that didn’t work at the box-office. Gori Tere Pyaar Mein reunites her with the team from the successful romcom Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu—director Punit Malhotra and Imran Khan. “Gori Tere is a sweet romantic comedy. What caught my attention about the film was that I hadn’t done a film like this before. It’s light and frothy like all good romcoms but also had a message and comes with its serious moments. It’s the kind of the film that you can watch with a bunch of girlfriends but will also keep you thinking after you leave the theatre.”
Shooting GTPM took the actress to Bhuj, where she first learnt what it means to be an actress. “I started my career with Refugee and the whole film was shot in Bhuj. I went back there for the first time since. So much has changed. Bhuj is almost unrecognisable. It’s a proper city now.”
Kareena and Imran’s paring had surprised many when EMAET released. “I think Imran and I work together. There might not be that OTT passionate chemistry between us, but there is a fun, cool vibe that comes across. Even Saif thinks we look good together.” While her co-star is a self-confessed ‘accidental actor whose ultimate dream is to become a filmmaker’, Kareena has no such plans. “What? Me direct?” she exclaims. “No way. I had no idea how to make a film. Like I said acting is in my DNA and I am going to be acting until the day I die.”
