TDP GOVERNMENT IGNORES SHOBHA NAGIREDDY

The Telugu Desam Government has kicked up a storm of controversy when the legislative affairs committee’s agenda had provisions for paying homage to Nandigama’s TDP MLA Tangirala Prabhakar, who died recently and ignored Allagadda MLA from the YSRCP Shobha Nagireddy, who died before the elections, but was declared elected posthumously.
YSRCP MLAs, who met on Wednesday, took up this issue and demanded that Shobha Nagireddy’s name too be included for obituary reference. YSRCP MLAs Bhuma Nagireddy and Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy strongly criticized the government for the partisan attitude. Shobha Nagireddy is a several time MLA, they reminded. (Post bifurcation, first session of AP Assembly begins tomorrow)
A truncated Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly will meet on Thursday for the first time after the separation of Telangana. The members will be sworn in first by protem speaker P Narayana Swami. Later, the house will pay homage to the departed MLAs.
The speaker would be elected on June 20 and the Governor will address the joint session of both the assembly and the council on June 21. The house would debate the motion of thanks to the governor on June 23 and 24.
Adequate security arrangements have been made for the assembly elections. Some 1200 police would be deployed during the session.

Smugglers enjoy political links

The politician-red sanders smuggler nexus in Kadapa, Nellore and Chittoor districts is a big challenge for the police and the Special Task Force. Investigations by the police have revealed that red sanders smugglers not only funded local politicians in Kadapa and Chittoor districts during the general elections, but also their relatives who contested in the local body elections.
The smugglers have connections to all political parties, including the YSRC, the Telugu Desam and the Jai Samaikyandhra Party, according to the police. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has said that the smugglers must be dealt with, with an iron hand irrespective of their political affiliation. Chittoor district collector K. Ramgopal then issued orders under the Preventive Detention Act against several notorious red sanders smugglers. Chittoor superintendent of police P.H.D. Ramakrishna said, “Most of the red sanders smugglers have political connections. Some are linked to the YSRC, some to the TD and some to the Jai Samaikyandhra Party. We are acting against them irrespective of political links.”
He said the police department is taking legal opinion for attaching the properties of smugglers. “Most of the properties are benami, so we are examining the issue,” he added. The collector of Chittoor issued orders against smugglers M. Reddy Narayana of Battalavandlapalle, Chappidi Mahesh Naidu of Chappidivandlapalle, Gangi Reddy of Kodur in Kadapa, Vijayanand Reddy of Chittoor, and Bhaskar Naidu of KV Palle in Chittoor, under the Prevention Detection Act.
One of the smugglers, Gangi Reddy, has fled to Dubai sensing trouble from the cops. He has claimed that both the TD and YSRC are involved in red sanders smuggling. Reddy Narayana had contested in the ZPTC election on a TD ticket. Mahesh Naidu is also a TD supporter. Gangi Reddy is a known YSRC supporter in Kodur Assembly constituency.
A senior police official said, “Reddy Narayana even tried for a TD Assembly ticket. The party denied him the ticket in view of his criminal background.” Reddy Narayana went to Kuwait in 1996 and was engaged in several illegal activities there including issuing of bogus certificates, for which he was imprisoned for 10 years. He was deported to India and was involved in the murder of the person in Kadapa who had tipped off the Kuwaiti police. Mr Ramakrishna said that under the PD Act, if the smugglers are detained, they will be in jail for a period of six months to one year.

Jagan Mohan Reddy calls for introspection

The three-day review meet of YSR Congress pertaining to North Coastal Andhra and the Godavari districts started at the R and B guest house on Wednesday. Party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy presided over the meet. As far as East Godavari is concerned, the review was conducted for five Assembly segments of Tuni and Prathipadu  Peddapuram in upland areas of the district and Kakinada rural and Amalapuram. A few leaders of Tuni expressed fear over some sort of harassment by the Telugu Desam as the latter was now in power. Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy, however, allayed their fear and assured them that he wou-ld stand by them, not only in the segments but also at the state level.
Several leaders brought to the notice of the leadership the issues that led to party’s debacle. According to them, the party’s chances were badly affected due to overconfidence about the party’s win in the polls at the state level, assurances by TD chief N. Chandrababu Naidu on loan waiver to farmers and women SHGs, intensive campaigning in favour of the TD-BJP combine by actor Pawan Kalyan and the Narendra Modi factor.
Mr Reddy gave a patient hearing to each of the leaders who spoke on poll issues segment-wise. He also reviewed the votes polled party-wise in ZP.
He called for introspection on the poll results.
